Art and Design at Hiltingbury Infant School
At Hiltingbury Infant school Art and design is highly valued as part of our ‘Creative Curriculum’. We aim for an art and design curriculum that is high quality, engaging, inspiring and challenges pupils. This in turn equips them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and invent their own works of art.
Children are encouraged to explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques. They are taught skills in drawing, painting, printing, collage, clay and model making.
We hold an annual ‘Arts Week’ in the Autumn Term. The children are given opportunities to study real works of art and work with local artists, dancers and musicians. Parents are invited into school to share their expertise and work alongside the children.
There are many opportunities to make observational drawing of real objects, encouraging children to look carefully and apply drawing skills learnt.
Every opportunity is taken to use the outdoor learning environment to enhance the children’s experiences.
Wonderful pieces of artwork, drama, music and dance are created during this week which are celebrated in a class Art Exhibition for parents to attend.
The Curriculum
Year R
In Year R the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework in which they work towards early learning goals in Expressive Art and Design.
They are given opportunities to explore materials. They are taught how to handle paintbrushes, use printing tools, mix colours and handle clay and other sculpting materials.
Key Stage One
Year 1 and Year 2 children follow the National Curriculum .
Pupils develop their practical skills but they should also be able to think critically about artists, their influences and their art work. The children learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history.
The children produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences. They become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.Sketch books are used throughout Key Stage 1 as a means of tracking skills progression. The children use these throughout their art work journeys which explain their thinking.
We ensure the children reflect,evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. For example, colour, pattern, shape, form or texture. We ensure that they are using the puppets 'Georgie Giraffe' when they are evaluating their own and others work.
Improving work is embraced and is all part of the learning process.
In Keystage 1 the children learn about great artists, craft makers and designers and their importance to our world.
The children and teachers have been very busy creating our super school leveret, ‘Hiltingbury’s Royal Hare’ for the ‘Hares of Hampshire’ summer art trail in Winchester.
All the children took part in our art competition to design the leveret on the theme of ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee’. The school council, Mrs Longman, Mrs Ford (art coordinator) and Mrs Frankcom helped to choose 4 winning designs from across Year R, Year 1 and Year 2.
Sky and Amber’s designs were chosen from Year R, Noah’s design was chosen from Year 1 and Julia’s design was chosen from Year 2. Mrs Ford and Mrs Frankcom helped to combine the designs together to make 1 joint design.
All the children and teachers painted or used their finger prints to paint the design onto the sculpture.
We are not allowed to reveal the whole image until the official unveiling on
Thursday June 16th.
The art trail is in Winchester from 16th June until 26th August 2022 and we can’t wait to see our leveret in Winchester.
