Climate and Sustainability

At our school, we believe that every child can help make a positive difference to the world around them. Our Climate and Sustainability work encourages children to care for their environment, understand how their actions affect the planet and develop habits that help create a more sustainable future.

Through our curriculum and wider school activities, children learn about nature, caring for living things, reducing waste, recycling, saving energy and making environmentally responsible choices. They have opportunities to take part in outdoor learning, biodiversity projects, active travel initiatives and school sustainability activities, helping them become responsible and informed global citizens.

A key part of our sustainability work is our World Superheroes team. These children are chosen as ambassadors for their classes and help to promote sustainability across the school. The World Superheroes meet regularly throughout the year to discuss ideas, share feedback from their classmates and lead activities that support our Climate Action Plan. Their projects may include litter picking, monitoring recycling, encouraging energy saving, improving biodiversity within the school grounds and raising awareness of environmental issues. By giving pupils a voice and an active role in decision-making, we help them develop leadership skills while making a positive difference to our school community.

Links to the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum

Climate and sustainability are woven throughout our curriculum and support learning across a range of subjects:

· Science: Children learn about plants, animals and habitats, developing an understanding of how living things depend on and interact with their environment.

· Geography: Pupils explore the local area and wider world, learning about natural and human environments and how people can care for places.

· Design and Technology: Children investigate materials and consider ways to reduce, reuse and recycle resources.

· PSHE and Citizenship: Pupils learn about responsibility, teamwork and the positive actions they can take to help their community and the environment.

By linking sustainability to everyday learning, we aim to empower our children with the knowledge, skills and values needed to care for our planet now and in the future.

This supports our school's vision of raising awareness of climate change, enhancing biodiversity, reducing our environmental impact and helping children understand how they can contribute to a more sustainable world.
